This annual event drew people from all across the United States to see the mule show, crafts, flea markets, and rodeo, as well as enjoy a trail ride and taste a variety of foods. The Clark County Fairgrounds was filled with close to 350 campers, of which 200 came in on the Sunday before. Over the weekend, there were 168 contestants and their mules participating in the events to win a handmade trophy, ribbon, and many wonderful prizes donated by area merchants who support the Clark County Mule Festival. Nearly 5,000 buttons were available and sold out again this year.

Wednesday, the local Head Start and Pre-K classes came out to the fairgrounds to visit and have a wagon ride. For some of these kids, it was their first contact with a mule. On Thursday morning, 4 wagons and teams went to the Clark County Nursing Home to visit with the residents and offer wagon rides to those who wished to take part. It is still undecided whether the kids and residents or the teamsters had more fun these two days.

Area elementary schools participated in a mule coloring page contest, which was put on display for the weekend. The winner of the quilt was Jan Varner of Keokuk, IA. The tack set was won by Kalissa Watkins of Industry, IL. Last year, a new event was added for Thursday afternoon. Due to many requests, the Camper Cookoff returned this year. There were 2 categories and a top-notch group of taste-testing judges. The chili category winner was Deb Barnett, who was last year’s stew category winner. It was held at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Kahoka, Missouri. People from all over the United States came to see the mules in a variety of contests and races. They also came to see the area’s best handmade crafts, an art show, taste a variety of foods, and go on a trail ride. The rodeo on Saturday night was over flowing with people, thanks to a beautiful fall evening. The fairgrounds were filled with approximately 327 campers who started coming on the Sunday before. Over the weekend there were approximately 150 contestants and their mules participating in the events to win handmade trophies, ribbons, and many fine prizes donated by area merchants who support the Clark County Mule Festival. Nearly 5,000 buttons were available and sold out again this year.

The craft barn was filled with many varied and beautiful handmade items. Among these were wood crafts, needle work, metal cut outs, horse shoe art, flower arrangements, holiday crafts, wildlife paintings, t-shirts and sweatshirts, rugs, jewelry, quilts, purses, signs, and many other fine items. Outside vendors provided items such as decals, belts and buckles, horse and mule tack, other leather novelties, yard signs, animal feed, trailer sales, wood furniture, all kinds of shirts, hats, flea market items, hot tub sales, and special interest groups. Foods were sold, including sandwiches of all kinds, plate lunches, desserts, honey and candy, funnel cakes, mini-donuts, ice cream, tacos, kettle corn and a variety of drinks. There were also several Not for Profit organizations selling items. A fish fry was held on Friday night by the Fine Arts Committee.

Area elementary schools participated in a mule coloring page contest, which was put on display for the weekend. The winner of the quilt was Micky Keller of Ft. Madison, IA. The saddle was won by Deb Bowen of Ely, IA. A new event this year taking place on Thursday afternoon was the Camper Cookoff. There were 3 categories and a top-notch group of taste-testing judges. Chili category winner was Kathie Overhulser of St. Francisville, MO; stew category winner was Deb Barnett; dessert category was Teresa Adair of Niota. Approximately 60 local pre-school and Headstart kids from Kahoka and Wayland came out to learn about mules and go for a short wagon ride, as well. The teams and wagons also traveled out to the Clark County Nursing Home to offer residents the chance to see them and go for a short ride. For those who were unable to come outside to meet the teams, one team hopped the curb and stood right outside the picture window to provide a better view.

On Friday afternoon, the children’s games were moved from the sand arena to the track due to mud, although not by request of the kids! There were several kids on hand to participate and no mules were required. Each child received a stick mule for participating. Mule Polo began at 5:30 with 3 teams vying for first place. The “Straw Hats” were the winners. Following shortly after Polo were the cattle classes, including team sorting, breakaway roping, and cattle doctoring.

Saturday morning started with the trail ride and had 43 riders. Again!

The third full weekend of September every year draws a crowd of families, friends, and spectators in to the Clark County Fairgrounds in Kahoka, MO. Folks travel from all over the United States and overseas to share their love for Missouri’s state animal – the mule. This year’s Clark County Mule Festival broke all previous attendance records and brought spectators from as far away as Germany to take in the weekend’s events. The 28th Annual Clark County Mule Festival drew in over 6,000 people, approximately 200 contestants and around 350 campers on September 20th-22nd, 2013. With something for everyone to enjoy, be it crafts and flea market finds, great food, trail rides, a mule rodeo and events, or simply visiting with friends, the Mule Festival is something you don’t want to miss! This year, attendees ranged in age from 6 months old to 88 years old! While official activities don't begin until Friday, many people bring their campers in early to enjoy camping out several nights during the week leading up to the festival. There were also several wagon trains and riders who rolled in through the week from various parts of the area.

The Commercial Building and Midway were filled with nearly 100 vendors who sold many crafts and handmade items, including jewelry, quilts, paintings, horseshoe art, and tack. Also on hand for purchase were clothing, trailers, and equine care items. Who could forget to mention the delicious foods with burgers, fried fish, funnel cakes, smoothies, tacos, honey, baked goods, and many other foods available, as well?

This year, the Clark County Mule Festival reached out to their Facebook followers starting on Sunday with the search for the Golden Muleshoe. It was hidden somewhere new every day with the promise of a different prize to whoever could find it and turn it in. Winners were: Chad Brotherton of Argyle, IA; Katlyn Simpson of Revere, MO; Geoff Wilson of Ottumwa, IA; Cari Garrett of Floris, IA; Christy Hoksbergen of Bussey, IA; Toby Moss of LaGrange, MO; and one anonymous winner.

Friday afternoon kicked off with some practice for the kids for the weekend’s events such as Monkey in the Tree and the Pantyhose Race in front of the grandstand. There were also games in the sand arena for the younger, mule-less crowd including a trail class with stick mules and a 3-legged race. A big thank you from the Clark County Mule Festival Committee goes out to all the volunteers and help who make this a great annual event, as well as the many contestants, spectators, and vendors who turn out to participate. We would also like to thank our community for supporting our endeavors through the years.
