The 30th Annual Clark County Mule Festival was held September 18th thru 20th, 2015 in Kahoka, MO. This annual event drew people from all across the United States to see the mule show, crafts, flea markets, and rodeo, as well as enjoy a trail ride and taste a variety of foods. The Clark County Fairgrounds was filled with close to 350 campers, of which 200 came in on the Sunday before. Over the weekend, there were 168 contestants and their mules participating in the events to win a handmade trophy, ribbon, and many wonderful prizes donated by area merchants who support the Clark County Mule Festival. Nearly 5,000 buttons were available and sold out again this year.
Wednesday, the local Head Start and Pre-K classes came out to the fairgrounds to visit and have a wagon ride. For some of these kids, it was their first contact with a mule. On Thursday morning, 4 wagons and teams went to the Clark County Nursing Home to visit with the residents and offer wagon rides to those who wished to take part. It is still undecided whether the kids and residents or the teamsters had more fun these two days.
Area elementary schools participated in a mule coloring page contest, which was put on display for the weekend. The winner of the quilt was Jan Varner of Keokuk, IA. The tack set was won by Kalissa Watkins of Industry, IL. Last year, a new event was added for Thursday afternoon. Due to many requests, the Camper Cookoff returned this year. There were 2 categories and a top-notch group of taste-testing judges. The chili category winner was Deb Barnett, who was last year’s stew category winner. In the stew category, this year’s winner was Vernon Hopp.
On Friday afternoon, the Wintermeyer’s hosted the Kid’s Games in the sand arena with 14 participants competing in Musical Carpets, Pin the Tail on the Mule, and the Obstacle Course. Even during the downpour, the games continued! Fun was had by all. The annual fish fry was held Friday evening in the 4-H pavilion, as well.
Kahoka Boy Scout Troup 145 presented the flags before Mule Polo started. Mary Thompson sang the National Anthem. Mule Polo began at 5:30 with 3 teams vying for first place. The “Polka Dot Hats” were the winners. Following shortly after Polo were the cattle classes, including team sorting, breakaway roping, and cattle doctoring.
Saturday morning started with the trail ride and had 51 riders. The mule show started at 10:00 a.m. with the Clark County Marching Band performing several songs, as well as the National Anthem. The Grand Entry followed the band with a presentation of flags, many mules, and wagons. Several radio stations were also present to broadcast during the festival.
The Rodeo began on Saturday night with a presentation of flags and Anna Hartzler, of Wayland, IA, singing the National Anthem. The VFW Post 4342 Ladies Auxiliary, of Kahoka, MO, did a commemorative balloon release for the MIA’s, POW’s and active people serving in the armed services. The grandstands and bleachers were standing room only on a beautiful September evening.
Sunday morning began with a trail ride with 10 riders heading out. Church services were held in the grandstand provided by the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys.

It takes many volunteers and the help of other organizations to keep the Clark County Mule Festival running smoothly every year. The Clark County R-1 FFA helped with parking and shuttles, while buttons were sold by a Relay for Life group and the Clark County Middle School Boosters provided the trash pickup. A big thank you from the Clark County Mule Festival Committee goes out to all the volunteers and help who make this a great annual event, as well as the many contestants, spectators, and vendors who turn out to participate. We would also like to thank our community for supporting our endeavors through the years. Remember, you can keep up-to-date with us throughout the year and see pictures from past years by following us on Facebook (Clark County Mule Festival) or visiting our website ( www.clarkcountymulefestival.com ). You can also purchase pictures from this year’s events at https://photosbystevenpink.wordpress.com/. We hope to see you next year at the 31st Annual Clark County Mule Festival on September 16th-18th, 2016!
