The 33rd Annual Clark County Mule Festival was held September 14th, 15th, & 16th in Kahoka, Mo. This years event featured crafts, flea markets, mule shows, trail rides, and a rodeo. Over the weekend, there were many contestants with their Mules participating in the events to win a handmade trophy, ribbon, and many wonderful prizes donated by area merchants who support the Clark County Mule Festival.
This year the Clark County Fairgrounds were filled with 274 Campers. On Friday afternoon, a camper drawing was held and the winner was Cheryl Borton of Burlington, Ia.
On Wednesday, over 50 students from the Pre-K came out to the fairgrounds to visit. There were three wagons and teams of mules to help give the kids a ride around the grounds. Jim Bash went to the school with his team of mulesto give rides to 3 & 4 year olds. The area elementary schools also participated in a mule coloring page contest again this year, which were put on display for the weekend; Landon Roberts won from Black Hawk Elementary School and Weston Davis was the winner from Running Fox Elementary School.
Then on Thursday, several wagons and teams went to the Clark County Nursing Home to visit with the residents and offer wagon rides to those who wished to take part.
On Thursday evening was the judging for the annual chili and stew camper cook-off. Judging started at 6:30 for the seven participants with chili entries and three participants with stew entries. This year the chili winner was Jeff Trindle and stew winner was Deanna Millard.
On Friday, kids games were held in front of the grandstand. The kids enjoyed playing a variety of games. The annual fish fry was held Friday evening in the 4-H pavilion, as well. During the evening everyone in attendance was able to enjoy watching mule polo followed by mule and cattle classes such as break away roping, steer daubing, steer doctoring, goat tying, team sorting, and roping.
Saturday morning started with 25 riders participating in the trail ride with Ralph Plenge who was the leader. The mule shows started at 10:00 a.m. with the Clark County Marching Band performing, as well as playing the National Anthem. The Grand Entry followed the band with a presentation of flags, many mules, and wagons.
Long time Mule Festival goer, Eleanor Denning age 108, from Iowa, was the oldest person in attendance this year at the festival.
New this year before the rodeo, on Saturday night, staff from Industrial Opportunities in Kahoka were on hand to give away over 100 “Noodle Mules” for the kids to enjoy. The “Noodle Mules” were made by the employees at Industrial Opportunities. This was made possible by funding from the Clark County Mule Festival, Exchange Bank of Northeast Missouri, Peoples Bank and Connection Bank.
The VFW Post 4342 Ladies Auxiliary, of Kahoka, MO, held a commemorative balloon release for the MIA’s, POW’s and active people serving in the armed services, right before the rodeo began.
The grandstands and bleachers were standing room only on a beautiful September evening for the rodeo. Following the rodeo again this year the band “Dark Horse” performed for those in attendance.
Sunday morning began with a trail ride, and church services were held in the grandstand provided by the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys.
Blair Webster, 2017 Old Settler’s Princess, was on hand to present trophies, ribbons & prizes during the mule show.
The big winners of the weekend was Judy Jones of Rushville, IL who won the queen size quilt. The winner of the $1,000.00 drawing was Debbie Logdson of Kahoka.
Golden Horse Shoe winners for the week were: Monday - Liam and Mackenzie Yoder of Brookfield, Mo; Tuesday - Mackenzie Yoder; Wednesday - Jesse Ohnemum; Thursday - Wendy Boggs; Janet Simpson.

The Clark County R-1 FFA helped with parking and shuttles, while buttons were sold by the Kahoka/Clark County Chamber of Commerce and the Local American Cancer Society. The Clark County Middle School Boosters provided the trash pickup again this year. A big thank you from the Clark County Mule Festival Committee goes out to all the volunteers and help who make this a great annual event, as well as the many contestants, spectators, and vendors who turn out to participate. We would also like to thank our community for supporting our endeavors through the years.
