The 32nd Annual Clark County Mule Festival was held September 15th, 16th, & 17th in Kahoka, Mo. This years event featured crafts, flea markets, mule shows, trail rides, and a rodeo. Over the weekend, there were many contestants with their Mules participating in the events to win a handmade trophy, ribbon, and many wonderful prizes donated by area merchants who support the Clark County Mule Festival.
This year the Clark County Fairgrounds were filled with 319 Campers. On Friday afternoon, a camper drawing was held for a set of cornhole & bean bag toss boards and the winner was Darrin & Odessa Howell.
On Wednesday morning, Becki Krueger visited with kids at the Sever Library’s Story time. She read ‘The story of a mule’ by Jake Johnson, and Mule Festival coloring books were given out for craft time.
Then on Wednesday afternoon, 3 wagons and teams went to the Clark County Nursing Home to visit with the residents and offer wagon rides to those who wished to take part. The wagons belonged to Richard and Janet Strader, Harold and Pat Brown, and Skeet and Cheryl Shipley.
On Thursday, over 90 students from the local Head Start and Pre-K classes came out to the fairgrounds to visit, have a wagon ride, and were provided snacks and a coloring book. There were eight wagons and teams of mules to help give the kids a ride around the grounds. The area elementary schools participated in a mule coloring page contest again this year, which were put on display for the weekend; Madison Buschling in Mrs. Scott’s class at Black Hawk Elementary School won the coloring contest.
Then on Thursday evening was the judging for the annual chili and stew camper cook-off. Judging started at 6:30 and there were three judges for chili and three for stew. This year the stew winner was Vernon Hopp and the chili winner was David Birky.
Elenor Denning, age 107, from Iowa was the oldest person in attendance this year at the festival. On Friday, kids games were held in front of the grandstand. The kids enjoyed playing such games as pole bending, wagon flags, people flags , and a few more. The annual fish fry was held Friday evening in the 4-H pavilion, as well.
Saturday morning started with 35 riders and 1 wagon participating in the trail ride. The mule shows started at 10:00 a.m. with the Clark County Marching Band performing, as well as playing the National Anthem. The Grand Entry followed the band with a presentation of flags, many mules, and wagons.
Madelyn Johnson, 2016 Old Settler’s Princess, on Saturday presented trophies, ribbons & prizes during the mule show.
New this year before the rodeo, Jennifer Dawson presented a cowgirl mounted shooting demonstration, where she rode her mule through a course of balloons.
Following Dawson’s demonstration was a presentation of flags and the singing of the National Anthem.

The VFW Post 4342 Ladies Auxiliary, of Kahoka, MO, held a commemorative balloon release for the MIA’s, POW’s and active people serving in the armed services.
The grandstands and bleachers were standing room only on a beautiful September evening for the rodeo. Following the rodeo new this year the band “Dark Horse” performed for those in attendance.
Sunday morning began with a trail ride with 9 riders and 1 wagon heading out. Church services were held in the grandstand provided by the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys.
Mikayla Plenge, 2016 Old Settler’s Queen, presented trophies, ribbons & prizes during the mule show.
The big winners of the weekend was Rosalie Clift of Kahoka who won the Painted Desert queen size quilt. The winner of the $1,000.00 drawing was Jed Soper of Alexandria, Mo.

It takes many volunteers and the help of other organizations to keep the Clark County Mule Festival running smoothly every year. The Clark County R-1 FFA helped with parking and shuttles, while buttons were sold by the Kahoka/Clark County Chamber of Commerce and the Clark County Football Asosciation and the Clark County Middle School Boosters provided the trash pickup. A big thank you from the Clark County Mule Festival Committee goes out to all the volunteers and help who make this a great annual event, as well as the many contestants, spectators, and vendors who turn out to participate. It takes many volunteers and the help of other organizations to keep the Clark County Mule Festival running smoothly every year. The Clark County R-1 FFA helped with parking and shuttles, while buttons were sold by the Kahoka/Clark County Chamber of Commerce and the Clark County Football Asosciation and the Clark County Middle School Boosters provided the trash pickup. A big thank you from the Clark County Mule Festival Committee goes out to all the volunteers and help who make this a great annual event, as well as the many contestants, spectators, and vendors who turn out to participate. We would also like to thank our community for supporting our endeavors through the years.
